Helping Your Child at Home

There are lots of things you can do to help your child with their learning. One of the most important things is to encourage your child TO TALK ! Children who are able to discuss and ask questions about everyday experiences, their learning and developing interests or hobbies are the ones who start to make sense of the world and obtain the habit of life long learning.
The school day is only part of a child’s learning experience – in order to consolidate their learning children need to practise skills at home. Homework is based on class activities and the work children should be able to do independently. Obviously they will need encouragement and a quiet place to think and complete their activities.

On this page you will find some of the things you can do to help your child. We aim to add to this list over the coming weeks.
If there are particular items you would like more information on then please let us know.
Working together in partnership can only benefit your child.

Reading
Thank you, to those of you who came to look at the new reading scheme we have purchased. This will be implemented in Term 4 (2012). Each book contains some information for you to discuss with your child and help them learn to read through enjoying books. The colour banding has changed slightly – please have a look at the new system – these will be written in your child’s reading diary as they move through the colours. The age levels alongside the coloured book bands refer to the reading age of a child. As we also check a child’s comprehension age they may well be reading a book at a colour band lower than their actual reading age. This is to develop comprehension skills which are an essential part of reading. You can help to develop these skills by asking your child questions about the text particularly those ones which ask them to express an opinion or work out answers from the text. The new reading books provide you with ideas inside the front and back covers and the Blooms questions may provide you with further help. Please ask your child’s teacher if you would like further help. Daily reading is vital for children to practise and develop their reading skills, vocabulary and understanding. It only needs to be 10 minutes! Click to download National Curriculum Levels     Click to download Blooms Questions
